Dee Murray: Championing Menopause Awareness and Education

Dee Murray, founder and CEO of the Menopause Experts Group (MEG), has emerged as a trailblazer in raising awareness about menopause and its profound impact on women’s lives. A retired advanced psychotherapist and human behaviourist, Murray has dedicated her career to empowering women and fostering better understanding and support systems around menopause.

Personal Motivation and Professional Journey

Like so many women within her age group, Dee Murray has faced significant life challenges, including divorce, trauma, and bereavement. Yet, through resilience and determination, she turned adversity into opportunity, building a multi-million-pound brand that is now recognised as one of the best business resources for those working to help others through menopause.

Murray’s dedication to menopause advocacy is deeply personal. The loss of a close family friend to severe depression and anxiety associated with menopause highlighted the urgent need for accessible support and education. Recognising the widespread gaps in knowledge, Murray established MEG to ensure women everywhere could approach this life stage with confidence and dignity.

With nearly three decades of experience in psychotherapy, Murray has developed award-winning programmes to support women during hormonal transitions. Under her leadership, MEG has expanded its reach to more than 20 countries, providing accredited menopause training and resources. MEG’s innovative offerings include the Business Partner Licence, which allows individuals to become Menopause Champions, providing education and support to their communities.

Breaking Barriers in Public Discourse

Murray has been a prominent voice in the media, advocating for systemic changes and breaking the stigma surrounding menopause. In November 2021, she addressed the alarming rise in suicide rates among women of menopausal age, emphasising the critical need for awareness:

  • “Mental health issues like depression, anxiety, and stress are hard to deal with, and many women will not know that they can commonly be caused by menopause. We cannot ignore what is happening or let these women suffer.”

She has also championed workplace initiatives, noting the rising number of employment tribunals citing menopause as a contributing factor. In May 2022, Murray remarked:

  • “Employers are starting to get the message about menopause in the workplace, but the growing number of employment tribunals in this area shows that there’s still a lot of work to be done.”

Advocacy for Accessible Healthcare

In February 2022, Murray expressed support for proposals to make Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) available over the counter, recognising the potential benefits for women often let down by inadequate menopause knowledge among healthcare professionals:

  • “Getting access to HRT without a prescription will be a positive for self-educated women who have found themselves let down by haphazard menopause knowledge among some GPs.”

Expanding the Conversation

Beyond MEG, Murray launched MenoChef Limited, a groundbreaking initiative focusing on nutrition and its role in managing menopause symptoms. Plans for a flagship cookery school aim to educate women on dietary changes that support hormonal health.

Recognition and Impact

Murray’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. In 2023, she was named the Most Influential Online Menopause Resource CEO. Her innovative work with MEG and MenoChef reflects her commitment to creating a world where menopause is openly discussed, understood, and supported.

Dee Murray’s legacy lies in her ability to inspire action, whether through community engagement, workplace training, or media advocacy. Her journey from personal adversity to professional success demonstrates the strength and resilience of women facing life’s most challenging transitions. Today, her work empowers countless others to embrace menopause with knowledge, confidence, and hope for a better future.
