Dee’s Weight Loss Part 3
Welcome to Dee’s Weight Loss Part 3.
I set myself a goal as you may know from my previous posts, to prove that weight loss is possible during menopause. Today, I feel proud to tell you that since I started just a few short weeks ago, I have now lost 3 KG towards my target of 10 KG. This is me, happy and healthy, no makeup (because it is often too hot here to wear it then find it melted on my chin).

I know you may want to know what I am doing to lose weight, and I am going to tell you. Honestly, it is nothing magnificent. I am just focused on my goal and educated on weight loss. But there are no real magic formulas. One would think it is all about calories in versus calories out. However, my bright young son Max who lives with me has been studying the effects of sugar on our health, and he has been forcing me to watch the lectures by Professor Robert Lustig. Well, it turns out this guy is a genius and I have discovered that I have a metabolic disease, just like most, if not all of us that carry a few extra pounds. You will soon realize as I did, that being overweight is actually not our fault.

Dee’s Weight Loss Tip: Sugar!
Yes, of course, I know all about sugar. We talk about it all the time and how it impacts menopause and its symptoms. Well, that’s what I thought until I started watching some videos that Max made me aware of, and reeducating myself. I think we all have to forget all the rubbish we have been fed by the media and food companies and start looking at hard scientific facts.
I want to give you this example that really SHOCKED me this week. As you know I am incredibly busy, I work full time running the business, and I also look after my elderly Mum who is 91 years old with some dementia (diagnosed just 3 years ago). I can see why Mum has only more recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and how she has kept so well and mobile all of her life. More about Mum in another blog.
Needless to say, she taught me everything I know about growing my own food, and she was brilliant at it. Even when we were incredibly poor. She was a single parent, and we would often have the power cut-off because she could not afford the electric bill, we would still have something we could go and pull out of the garden and slap between two slices of bread! Mum’s hard work and the garden, fed us all very well. I digress, as I said, I will talk more about how our oldies got through their lives, and why so many are now seeing 100.
Where was I? Oh yes, I wanted to tell you my shocking finding this week, as I was preparing the family a meal. I had some cod and was looking for some green veg. My peas in the garden have been ravaged by the hens who got loose, and my courgettes are something we eat most days. I wanted some french beans as I haven’t got any ready yet in the veg patch. So I went to the freezer and found an emergency shop-bought bag of french beans and thought oh great! I don’t have much time, this will be quick, and healthy for Mum (she loves beans).
WRONG – Max, my son who is 19 and seems much smarter than me, told me to read the label. I do take credit for his findings, after all, I did grow him! He has, as I said been studying sugar and its effects on our health. Well, I was horrified when I read the label (and I have to admit this was the first time I had even thought to read the label of a bag of frozen veg). It was packed with added sugar!!! I could not believe it. We had an old box of sugar puffs in the cupboard (Max had left as he won’t eat it after his newfound info) and there were almost as many teaspoons of added sugar in the frozen beans as there were in the cereal box, I kid you not! I could not believe my eyes.
Dee’s Weight Loss: Takeaway
My takeaway this week, is not to go and order a Chinese meal, NO, not that kind of take-away! It is to make sure you read the labels. Look out for added sugar. Firstly, watch this video on YouTube from Professor Lustig and you can decide whether you want to give up sugar or not. It’s an absolute eye-opener. Food companies have made food labels very difficult for us to understand on purpose.
So, I have now given up sugar in all the areas where I had been going wrong. I read all the labels now and have started taking this VERY seriously. By taking out added sugar, hey presto, more weight comes off.
SUGAR, SUGAR, SUGAR!
It has been poisoning us for years. I knew, but also didn’t if that makes sense? We do bury our heads in the sand. Follow my lead, you will not only lose weight but your aches and pains may go away too!
My breakfast this morning is some natural Greek yogurt with live cultures. This, added with some chopped walnuts, and a drizzle of organic honey. Now I have given up most sugars, the honey tastes even sweeter! Let’s catch up next time.
